Using Masonn's logic, there is one other possibility which should be eliminated before spending more money on the wrong thing.

The keyboard! the Fn, F5, F6 left & right buttons control the screen behaviour. As you are obviously quite handy, try booting up with the keybard removed - just thinking if there is a bad/crossed contect there - unpredicatble behaviuour could occur, if you understand me....

Another possibility that occurs to me is that most laptops these days have ambient light sensors to regulate screen brightness.

I'd be searching through the settings to see what they are and make sure they're correct.

On Windows I'd start in the display settings and see if it's set to automatically adjust the brightness etc.

He's already swapped the inverter, see back up the thread.

    Thanks everyone.

Laptop is 20 months old. I have tried the Fn F5/F6 combo but only fn F6 is working for about 3 seconds.

Checked all settings and nothing looks unusual.

Looking at the cable next and go from there

I'm glad I found this thread as I've had the same issue with my laptop tonight. I've just ordered myself a new inverter from ebayso hopefully it'll do the trick now.
    Thanks all for the advice!

Just came to update this thread to pass on my heartfelt thanks.
Having read this thread on Monday evening, I got up a youtube video & DH dismantled my laptop while I ordered the new part. The new part arrived yesterday morning and cost about £20 from ebay. It's fitted and I'm now back on my laptop.
Thank you all very much for saving me from destitution ie; dancing round the room and buying an ipad that I really want but can't justify yet!

Had something similar at work with a Lenovo, screen is darker when on battery and brighter when plugged in, Except it was still dark when plugged in, replugging it a few times helped,

If you bought this 20 month (21 now) old laptop new from a shop, you should take it back! I'd reasonably expect a branded laptop to last longer than this, and not have to take it to bits to repair myself. They would be allowed to attempt repair before having to replace it for you.
