Travel Expenses and Cancelled Lectures

Just a thought...

If I have travelled into uni by train, and arrive to find out my lecture has been cancelled without prior warning, can I claim my train fare back from the university?

short answer - no. sometimes this just happens. i get that it's a pain, but you won't get anywhere with this request, other than marking your own card as being awkward.

  • Ah, ok, thank you! Argh, this is so frustrating. I go back this week and we've been assigned the most unreliable lecturer for one of our modules. He's already cancelled the 2nd years lectures today without telling them - I just know the same thing will happen all term. Oh well, if it gets too frequent I'll just make a complaint about the lack of contact time!

I feel your pain! I agree that there's nothing that you could recoup money wise, however if this happens often I would suggest speaking to your course rep or someone from the student union - if your lecturer is doing this frequently then it's not fair on the students.

cancelled lectures should be rescheduled. if he's ill or there's been an emergency, then it makes sense that all the lectures for the day will be cancelled. if there is a problem of it happening often, then you should complain via your course rep. however, you shouldn't lose the 'contact time', the course content should be covered at another time.

sometimes things just come up - but after a one off, don't get too upset as sometimes life just gets in the way of things.

As already said, these things happen. If it happens a lot, then that would be cause for a complaint, but a one-off can be forgiven. The day doesn't have to be wasted though, you could use the time to go to the library or meet up with other classmates and study and/or discuss the content.
