LHA calculations and overpayment

This may be quite long-but Id like to get as many facts in as possible.

I have commited the ultimate MSE sin-I read documents properly this morning for what must be the first time since receiving them on the 14th of April 2011.

In march I reported a salary increase to our local council-I had a visiting officer come to my home to collect supporting documentation (14th of March). A few days later I had another visiting officer arrive unanounced-saying there was a problem with the scanner and my evidence was lost so could they take the copies again?

On the 9th of April I received a new calculation letter which stated that supporting documents were not received and that they were recalculating without-if there was an overpayment we would be liable.

Feeling rather fed up of my docs not reaching the council using visiting officers, I had DH take off work one day and drive me there. I presented my documentation and was given a receipt (this happened on the 14th of April and its where my error comes in), I got another letter saying that because DH had a bonus (£2000) paid in December, there was an overpayment of £900 we would need to pay back.

I had a baby early this month and DH got a salary increase-so I called again to update circs. While looking through the documents I found the receipt and noticed that it has details of our docs listed, but the name-address and reference numbers belong to someone else.

So in light of this, we are wondering if there really was an overpayment and although we've paid it back-can we dispute it?
The other thing I never questioned was the inclusion of the annual bonus in the calculation? I have since heard that it should not have been included as its not guarunteed income? We used it for debt repayment. We have another bonus being paid with this next (January) payslip (a similar amount) so need to work out if we should be saving it or if we can go ahead and use it to paydown some more of our debt?
