Can't install XP SP2 or 3

I've been given a PC and done a clean install of XP Pro on it. Problem I'm having is installing any of the service packs. Windows update needs SP3, SP3 needs SP2. SP2, I downloaded and tried to install but it fails.

I don't seem to be allowed to post the whole of svcpack.log here as it is too long but I've included an edited version of it below.

I had a similar problem when trying to install SP3 when it first came out.
Turns out it was a registry issue (some of the keys are locked) and MS gave me some instructions to follow to sort it out.
I'll see if I can dig them out.

You will see the Command Line Tool running for about 10 mins or so. After the
process restart the computer and try installing SP again. The issue would have
been fixed.

NB - this was for my SP3 problem with an OEM install from Time/Tiny so I'm not sure if it will cause any issues.

You could try slipstreaming the service pack on to an installation CD using nLite...

That way Windows will install with the latest service pack pre-installed. You can even slipstream other hotfixes and updates:

That's a good bit of advice. Noted it was dated 2004 so the computer itself is quite old. Maybe if you could download 'Speccy' from File Hippo you can ascertain what processor you have.
Of course, the job would be easier if you could get hold of Service Pack 2 to install.

Machine make and model or Motherboard model?

Spot on! Installed the program cited in the MS knowledgebase article. It resolved the issue and SP2 continued installing automatically. Now have SP3 installed and all well.

What if you need to do a reinstall or a repair install? You don't want to go through this rigmarole each time.
You should update your disc.

alternatinely IMAGE the harddrive using something like acronis true image, erm, TODO backup freeware. if you have 2hdd's then put the backup on the 2nd hdd, if only 1 drive you'll need to partition the hdd, image of the partition shouldnt be much larger than 4gb depending on how much you have installed and its running perfectly. and in case of recovery it should only take 5-10minutes.
