Where do you buy wood from?

I am looking to get some wood for a number of pine shelves. Previously I have bought from B and Q : http://www.diy.com/nav/build/timber/furniture-boards/pine-laminated-boards/Furniture-Board-Pine-W-2350-x-D-200-x-H-18mm-9276247
But when you have to buy lengths and then cut them to make the shelves, it seems a very expensive and wasteful process. There must be other cheaper suppliers out there?
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Some of the wood prices in B&Q sell to retail at around the same cost as it sells to trade.
Wood is expensive.
In any event its probably always best to get it from source ie a proper timber yard or reclamation yard.
I would look at a reclaimed/new oak sleeper if you have the tools to cut it up.
Probably the cheapest way to buy it.Not Again0 -

Good luck with that !You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0 -
I made some slat shelves to go in the old airing cupboard, and the wood from B&Q and Wickes was very poor quality, with dents, splits, knots etc. In the end I bought from Homebase. Pricey, but the quality was much better. I am sure a local timber yard would be better, and there is one near me but in the end I could not be hassled with their odd opening times. The local builders merchants, Coomers, has wood, but they are very expensive unless you have a trade account. When I was a lad, over 30 years ago, I bought wood at school, including ash and mahogany. I hate to think how much that would cost today.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0

wood is expensive now, dont let anyone tell you any different.
and best quality wood cost even more.
all depends on the job you are doing. shelves for the garage? use any old cheap wood. used or not. even free pallet wood.
shelves for the lounge, not being painted? then you will need the best you can buy/afford.Get some gorm.0 -

The wish of good luck is 5 years out of date.
However, I do appreciate I am lucky enough to have a proper timber yard just 3 miles from my house who are part of the management process for woods that are controlled for shooting & commercially.
Then I have a mate who helps run it all. Then again, if he was that much of a mate I wouldn't be paying
You never know, maybe that timber yard may even throw in a few cuts for free to make it more manageable.......
But hey, not everyone lives in a city.
That reminds me, when I sell my house I must remember to dig up the sleepers that were bought for £20 a pop.....Not Again0 -
Thanks all. They are shelves for the lounge to go in the alcoves between chimney breasts so need to look good.
I will try a few timber yards and see how they compare to bandq.0
