I think it's a lovely idea. My Dad retires this year and we'll be getting him something. He does retire on his birthday though.

I think a day out or something like that is a great idea.

We got my dad a Nintendo DS with the brain training games as a bit of a tongue in cheek gift.

Depends how many people are contributing but a party/short break somewhere?

Hi Shay's Mum, it's just me I'm afraid from the family  and she is already having a retirement do which I am going to. I expect her colleagues would have organised a collection etc and I wouldn't be able to afford a break - nice idea though thanks!

It's a good idea Judith but she has a DS! My brother bought her one a while ago and she also has a WII so I think she is well covered for things like that!

They have sunloungers too but something else garden related is great Pinetree, and I'll check the hamper idea out too Chris898 - thanks to you both.

I have thought about buying a special rose for the garden as she loves these and has been looking at them for ages... what do you think?

Please keep your suggetsions coming. I am finding them really useful Thank you ;)

I (+ two siblings) got my Mum an Ipad for Christmas/60th birthday/retirement so she could Skype relatives in Canada, read newspapers and books, surf the net, watch videos and tv, message me and have a computer type device which doesn't need seven remote controls and a degree before you can switch it on like the rest of the stuff my dad (under the guise of joint ownership) has!

A kindle? And maybe get her (or get another family member to) a kindle gift card so she can buy a few books. :)
