Mentally Ill Boyfriend Kicked Off JSA. What Next?

Recently my boyfriend has been going through some depression. He's had depression and anxiety for 8 years but has coped.

The past month he hit rock bottom. He's been self harming a lot, he don't leave the house and rarely gets out of bed. He's only 27, and watching him is upsetting.

The past couple of weeks hes been admitted to hospital twice, nearly got sectioned, and has had emergency appointments with a CPN and Psychiatrist. He self harms on a regular basis. He says he's not suicidal but the cuts are singular and are getting deeper unlike scattered scratch type cuts.

He's also on citalopram which is causing sleep issues at the moment, he finds it hard to sleep and he sometimes goes dizzy, which are apparently side effects.

He also suffers with anger issues. I took him to the doctors on an emergency appointment and because the doctor gave him a 2 week waiting time to see a mental health team he threw the chairs in the doctors up the wall.

He had a back to work course to go to but I've had to call them twice to ask them to hold it off . Yesterday they told me on the phone that he is not eligible for JSA and he needs to claim another benefit.

This is where I am confused. What benefit? The Job Center have told me to speak to speak to my partners doctor/mental team. I have no idea what to say or do.

I assume now he's not on JSA the housing benefit would be stopped. Such a mess and I don't know where to turn to for advice.

What if he is refused whatever benefit he has to claim but can't claim JSA? We have a joint claim but because I have a 2 year old I am on Income Support at the moment but will be working when he's at school.

Anyway, any advice?

  • its called ESA (employment support allowance) google it and it will have links and details on everything he needs to do to claim it, also try DLA (disability living allwnace)

    Thanks.

What I am worried about is if doctors/mental health team don't give a medical note. I've never had to get one before so don't know the protocol. But, at the moment I'm the one that deals with his appointments etc.

The doctors won't even allow him to collect his own medication because he's on suicide watch.

If they don't/can't give him one then theres nothing else to claim because he can't attend his back to work course due to how he is at the moment.

Just a little worried atm as this is all new to me but thanks for the replies.

If he's as bad as you say and then you have nothing to worry about, the note should be a formality.

  • Agree with above.... might be worth thinking about DLA application in future (non means tested benefit for those with care/mobility needs).. but ESA is the option regarding the alternative to JSA (although I caution that advice as I haven't a clue of the technicalities regarding 'couples' and benefits). Given how much difficulty he seems to be having I would expect a 'sicknote' to be a formality (from someone involved in his treatment)... if not I'd be seriously considering changing GP. There's plenty info on DLA and ESA on this site if you search.. or otherwise across the internet. But in basic, ESA has an 'assessment phase' of 3 months during which sicknotes typically give entitlement to assessment rate... and around end of 3 months you get assessed for the main phase (a work capability assessment) of ESA.

Why are you on a joint claim of JSA but your also claiming income support? Income support is for lone parents and sick/disabled.

I tried to claim JSA along with my partner and they said I could only claim Income Support as I wasn't able to look for work with my child. My child is not my partners and my partner decided he would look for work. Job Center automatically put my on Income Support until my child is 4 I believe.

I have a nasty feeling that you should have been on a joint JSA claim with your partner, not claiming IS.

Do you and your boyfriend live together?
Just out of interest is he the child's father?

Yes we live together. I did ask the Job Center about this a number of times because at one point I wanted to change so I could get a job and my partner could look after my child but they said although it's a joint claim he is the one claiming JSA and mine is Income Support so I cannot do that.

Ever since then I've assumed I'm on Income Support. Infact, I'm going to give them a call today and ask them just to be sure I am claiming the right benefit.
