Iphone 4 Push email problem

Hi I've had an iphone 4 since about October/November 2011, shortly after getting it it updated to iOS 5.0.1. It was and has been fine up until the last couple of weeks, it now doesn't seem to want to retrieve emails unless you specifically open the email app.
It was always set to push them and to also check every half hour and worked fine, yet today in at work even when automatically connected to the wifi network it still refused to retrieve email until I opened the app.
I've turned the settings off and on and the phone too and nothing has changed. Am I alone? Has anyone got a solution? It is really quite annoying!

Have you tried deleting the email account and resetting it up?
Everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn't ok then it isn't the end
