When informing his insurer he was now unemployed, the insurer withdrew cover, as they won't cover the unemployed.

So be careful how you go about this - especially in view of your ongoing claim!

My insurer wont cover unemployed people, But if your retired and not claiming JSA they will cover you.

I was playing with the online quotes this time putting charity and part time voluntary work and some quotes came back cheaper but in the end not as cheap as my renewal.

because there was no option for "Unable work due to illness"

Where did you get your quote from?

When helping my mum with her car insurance (she can't work due to disability) there was an option for this - on more than 1 website. Try gocompare.

    Sorry - I'm back again!!

I've done a few comparisons and found a couple of companies offering slightly more expensive deals - but I'm happy to pay that to get a "fresh start" with honest information.

However, I've just discovered that my current insurer: Sheila's Wheels, and the other two alternatives: Esure and First Alternative - are all connected! I think Esure are the main company, and the other two are off-shoots (or whatever).

Does this mean that I should avoid Esure and FA because they can easily look up my previous file with Sheila's Wheels and then potentially start asking questions about my previous employment? Or should I just go for it anyway and hope that they don't question it?
Yes advoid them if they are connect as insurers in the same group share information with each other. They all state this on their websites.

The groups are often bigger than you think and they often hide under well-known brand names.

I don't know where you live but it may be worth looking at a mutual i.e. NFU, LV even if you have to pay slightly more.

I think you should put down retired as you can be medially retired and you can also come out of retirement.

The alternative is to find an insurer who looks at your "type" of occupation rather than the "actual" occupation or "actual" job you do/are qualified for.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
