Customers of energy suppliers who aren't part of the ERA
Strictly speaking the back billing rules outlined were only signed up to by the big six suppliers who are part of the ERA. However Ofgem has recently written to all domestic suppliers and stated the following:
"We expect all domestic energy suppliers to adhere to the back billing requirements. Whilst the ERA back billing code does not apply to all suppliers the principle of being unable to seek payment from customers for more than one year's gas or electricity where the supplier was at fault for not billing the customer does. Therefore, you may wish to refer to the ERA billing code and scenarios for guidance when deciding whether the back billing rule should be applied in a particular circumstance." What you need to work out is whether you actually owe this debt or not. If you cancelled your DD before the final bill then you may well so so.
Your bank statements should give you all the info you need.
Whether the back billing rules apply in these circumstance is of course another argument.

they said the last dd for £100 didnt go through as it was cancelled because we joined EDF..

As others have suggested did *you* cancel the DD arrangement with the bank?

For the benefit of others, SSE (of which Atlantic is a brand) IME is one of the few suppliers capable, for several years now, of the "not exactly rocket science" of refunding balances by Direct Credit just as long as the customer doesn't cancel the DD mandate with the bank. IME they are also capable and willing (if asked) to suspend the normal monthly DD collection, (without cancelling the DD arrangement), pending the final bill.

SSE companies have a dedicated contact number for complaints handling. Phone up and find out why they failed to ring you back as promised. Make them realise you consider that a discourtesy.
