Does anyone know if a settled account can go back on credit file?

Options
Hi, sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, I have tried to look for answers but couldn't find any...

I am hoping to apply for a new mortgage and have been waiting for a few defaulted account to come off my credit file as they were defaulted 6 years ago.

These have come off now and I thought that I would clear them so that I wouldn't have to state them as loans on my mortgage app, however when I rang one company they told me that it would show back up on my credit report as they would log it as settled.

Does anyone know if this is true? I'm not sure what to do for the best and don't want to mess up my credit file again!

Thank you! x

whoever you spoke to hasnt a clue

    not true at all.
  • Thanks, I was hoping they were talking rubbish but I also don't know much about debt collection agencies and what they can do!
  • I too hope to apply for a mortgage soon (IVA should fall off my credit file in March) and just wandered if a failed attempt last year will hinder my chances.

(the problem was that when I went to the bank to enquire about how much I would be able to borrow they put it through as an application by accident)

If your bank admitted it was a mistake, they can have it deleted from your credit file. Either contact them directly, or dispute it with the credit agencies. A while ago I got a couple of small errors (missed payments I didn't actually miss) corrected by disputing them with Experian.

Otherwise the search of your file will show up, but I don't think it shows any details beyond the lender, the amount and the fact it was a mortgage application. Approvals and declines look the same on my credit file - it doesn't say what answer I got, let alone why, just that a search was done. You might have been offered a mortgage but changed your mind :-)

The IVA will still be gone from your record in March.

  • Thanks Davey.

I was worried that it might show as a declined attemp which would obviously look bad to lenders. I'll contact experian and see what they say.

    Thanks again.

The odd refusal on the file is not of much importance. The problems arise when clusters of the little b*gg*rs crop up, showing you have made numerous attempts at obtaining credit, which will indicate desperation for money and / or fraudulent applications
  • Roger that Foggy, thanks a lot.
