Housing Benefit

Both me and my partner work Full time but not on a great wage.

We get a small amount of housing benefit towards our rent.

We have 1 daughter and are due another later this year.

Currently we are in the "2 bedroom housing allowance" category, Will this change to 3 person allowance once the baby arrives?

AFAIK the baby is not considered a a 'person' for Housing Benefit purposes untl they are a year old, and then I think would be expected to share a room with your other child.

So as far as I know, the answer is no.

Try the bedroom calculator. 2 girls can share a bedroom until one of them is 16. https://lha-direct.voa.gov.uk/BedRoomCalculator.aspx

A boy and a girl can share until one of them is 10.

  • I'm afraid you will not get a 3 bedroom rate as you have to of the same sex children. You can have two people sleeping in one room (this is stated by the councils when it comes to housing and the law stats any more can be classed as over crowding).I have a boy and a girl and I will not get a 3 bedroom rate until the eldest turns 8 years old and I do know some councils won't pay the rate until the eldest is 10 years old, so I am counting myself lucky!

I wasn't aware that there were some area's where the age limit is lower than others. I thought it was a national thing. Learn something new every day.
  • I thought that about the age thing too! But I was told this from my local HB office. I think the bottom line is with people having more kids and there being less housing we'll probably see the age children can share go up. :(
