Overcharged by Powergen in excess of £500
Options
Last June, we requested to transfer our eletricity supplier to powergen on a capped rate until 2010 and have just received the first invoice. After checking the actual reading on the last supplier invoice, I realised that we had been overcharged by at least £500 pounds. I have phoned to complain and they have put the account on hold and I have forwarded a cheque for the amount that I feel is due.
I will be looking soon for another supplier but according to the Sunday Mail, the current supplier can refuse a transfer if the balance outstanding is over £100. After waiting over 7 months for an invoice I am not sure how long it may take them to resolve this.

They can object if £1 or more has been outstanding for at least 28 days. If there are problems with your account, it is probably best to wait until they are sorted out before changing otherwise it could complicate things.0

Your account has been placed on hold while powergen contact the old suppliers - If anything it means your old suppliers have not billed you enough, As the opening read powergen used, is sent to your old supplier to bill you to.
They will raise an Agreed Read Dispute (Or an ARD as they may have told you) should take 28 days to resolve - But can take upto 6 weeks depending on who your old supplier was.0 -

If you owe money to your current supplier, or have a bill outstanding for more than 28 days, you may be unable to switch until you have paid what is due. Ofgem and energywatch are putting in place measures that will allow you to transfer outstanding balances to a new supplier, so this restriction may not apply in future. Until then, we recommend that you clear any outstanding debts before you make the switch.
There is no specification as to how much that bill must be. BG will object if it is over £1.0
