Please help.
I posted a month or so ago that all of a sudden my ipod wouldnt sync. So I did the remove and reinstall thing. It stripped all my songs off and then wouldnt reinstall!!! Fuming, I tried again and again, but kept getting error messages. So I thought, oh well, I have had it two years, it is probably at the end of its life. So yesterday, I bought a new one. THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING! It has registered it, says that the software is all up to date, but wont update. I get the following error messages:
> error 1814
> error -50
> error - won't write to disk
Also, every time I connect it, my PC says I have connected unknown hardware.
I have also removed the software from the computer (not just the icon, but the software) and reinstalled - twice.
Please someone help. I just want to listen to some music!
Thank you in advance.

Is there another PC you can try it with? Are your USB ports working OK with other devices? Have you googled those error messages?0

My OH has a laptop, but it is new and doesnt have itunes on it yet. The USB ports have been working for the camera though. Didnt think of googling the error messages:rolleyes: ... will try and report back!
Thanks.0 -
Just a quick question (I don't have an iPod or iTunes and never will, so I can't test or whatever), but are you following any tutorials or anything to install it? I know iPods and iTunes can be a pain to install and get correctly syncronized. If not, have you tried looking for any tutorials?
edit; Or looking up the error codes.0 -
PF gives good advice. Try plugging it into a friends pc.
You don't need to install iTunes to do this. If you just plug an iPod into a PC it should be recognised as a Removable Drive."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

Will try that later. Interestingly, I have googled the error message and it seems a popular one! Sadly, I havent figured out how to fix it yet, but I shall persevere!!
Thanks for everyones help so far, will keep you posted!0 -
Hi,
I've had some difficulties with a 4th generation iPod and found the following useful in resolving my issues;
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=288180&tstart=0
http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?threadid=135673&highlight=replace+hard+drive

I had to drop the iPod to get the hard disk recognised but then went for the reformat - and everything has been fine for quite a while now. I don't know if your symptoms are the same but maybe there are some hints to be found in the above.

Thanks very much. Still no joy... occasionally the ipod updates and then it wont recognise it again. I have tried updating the USB software and a couple of other googled solutions. Tempted to take the darn thing back to the shop and go and buy a different MP3. Problem is, I have no idea who makes the alternatives...they kind of dominate the market...!!!!!

Plenty of others to choose from.
Depends how much space you want etc...
This is where my money will most likely go when my iPod 4th Gen dies:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sandisk-Sansa-e280-Video-Player/dp/B000IT62UK/sr=8-1/qid=1171316736/ref=pd_ka_1/026-0971010-3448441?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
It'll either be the above or possibly the Samsung Z5:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-YP-Z5A-4GB-MP3-Player/dp/B000F2BUPM/sr=1-3/qid=1171316786/ref=sr_1_3/026-0971010-3448441?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
Both excellent players. I personally don't like using iTunes, I prefer being able to choose my media player, and preferably like to drag and drop my music (which you can definitely do with the Z5).
Also the Z5 has about 30 hours of battery life and supports Ogg Vorbis (music format I use). The Sansa Series is very good though, very complete and well priced, plus they can play videos (albeit at a lower frame rate, but watchable for a quick Family Guy episode).
There's also the Creative Vision M series, which are a lot more like the iPod 5th Gen than the above links (which resemble the Nano)."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
The only problems I've had were with the USB lead.0

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone. I removed and reinstalled 7.0.2 3 times, then tried version 6.0, then reinstalled 7.0.2 and now my IPOD works! I wouldnt have known what to do without all your suggestions.
Thanks a million.0
