5,000 New Jobs being created!!

Supermarket chain Asda has announced plans to open 25 new stores and three depots, creating 5,000 jobs this year.
There will be a new depot in Rochdale, an existing one in Falkirk will be replaced and one in South Elmsall in Yorkshire, which was bought from Netto, will be revamped.
What absolutely FANTASTIC news!!

This isn't "new" jobs though! They would have been created whether the cuts were there or not due to Asda's ambitious expansion plans and the same for Morrison's. Bet the government will use these figures to its advantage though....0

I doubt it. This type of job is for part time housewives and students who could 'get by' with or without this income.0 -
You have to read behind the headlines with these sorts of things and not fall for the guff hook line and sinker.
The news about the depots is good, but those like the one at Falkirk which is being replaced or the one revamped, will not create vast amounts of new jobs because they will all ready have people working there, but hopefully some new jobs will be needed if they are expanded.
The new supermarkets will be where most of these 'New' jobs will be created. These will be in the main part time jobs, still nothing to be sniffed at, but the figures on the new jobs are most likely to be misleading. There are plans afoot to build a new giant Tesco's near us, we've just recently gained another Morrisons, both these firms fanfared the vast amount of jobs they will be creating with the new stores. What they don't mention is the vast amount of jobs that were / will be lost due to these stores being built, as they are both being built over where there were existing shops / supermarkets. So the new job figure is actually a few new jobs plus replacement jobs for those they took away from the area.
Your joy at 5,000 off the dole is understandable but you really shouldn't allow these companies to make a mug of you. The jobs being for the main, part time will mean that those who do gain new work will most likely just swap their JSA benefit payments for Tax Credit benefit payments. Depending on hours etc they will probably still qualify for things like Council Tax help and Housing benefit. Well, I am always the optimist .... it pulls me through every day with a smile on my face.
I couldn't be as downbeat as some posters on here, I find it sad that 5,000 new jobs is dismissed as some sort of gimmick ...... I'm sure those who can now work and contribute to society will be feeling they are doing a real worthwhile job.
As I have said before .... we have many jobs going begging where I work - these are at the other end of the spectrum, of course, being extremely highly skilled ....... but we cannot get a single person to fill them!! We are looking to increase the starting wage up from £42,000 as that's putting a lot of applicants off, I'm sure of it.

That statement use to be true a decade or so ago, but those days are long gone. Though I guess if you live in a quaint old fashioned bubble somewhere in the affluent South East it might still hold true for a tiny minority.

If you walk around my local asda (Crawley, Sussex) you will see that most, if not all the workers are made up of housewives, kids and OAPs all working part time for some extra cash.0
