Faulty Memory Foam Mattress

Options
Hello Fellow MSE's,

I wondered if anyone has had a similar problem and has managed to get a resolution as looking around everyone seems to have differing experiences and outcomes.

I bought a DBL memory foam mattress from Poundstretcher on 02/12/11 and after about 30 days got fed up with profuse sweating as both me and my wife were waking up in the night at least once a night dripping with sweat and then it caused problems when you got back into bed as you can imagine. :(

I phoned said company and they advised that it was "personal preference" and the product is not faulty and that sweating is personal to each person.

((At this point I got the but between my teeth and thought it was letter writing territory))

I advised that customer services member that I would be writing a letter and making a complaint under the Sales of Goods Act at which point she had the cheek to advise me that I "will probably not get a refund" :rotfl:so now I have written a letter today to post and I await a response within the next week or so.

I just wondered if anyone has any real-life experiences or maybe able to advise if what I am saying can actually achieve a result?

Cheeers :)

  • Many people on here have commented that you do get warmer using memory foam. So it doesn't necessarily mean your one has a fault.

Could you use a thinner duvet?

Try a cotton mattress topper, been mentioned a few times as helping with the heat.

The mattress isn't faulty so she's right, you're not entitled to a refund at all. It just doesn't suit you.

Many many people have had the same experience on memory foam mattresses, it's a known 'side-effect'. You are afterall surrounding yourself with synthetic foam, so it's not really suprising it makes you sweat!

The best suggestion is as above, get yourself a good quality COTTON mattress protector/topper to put a good layer between yourselves and the foam.

  • Since I bought a memory foam matress topper I've found that I have not had to use an electric blanket to warm my bed at all.

I would agree with Poundstretcher that this isn't a fault with the product, simply one of the properties of the material used, in the same way that sleeping under nylon sheets would cause you to sweat more than if you were to have a set of cotton ones.

    Thanks for your advice.

We have already taken many steps to reduce the heat (purchased a cotton topper, thinner duvet, thin blanket, no clothes) but still have the same problem. We are talking like "drenched" with no signs of improvement. I don't necessarily think the mattress has anything 'faulty' about it but under the Sales of Goods Act if the item is not fit for purpose, which in my opinion it is not then they say it is classed as 'faulty' - merely a term they use.

It also says on the description of the item that it creates a "restful" nights' sleep, which I think is a bit of a false claim and also I was not made aware that temperature will increase (seems like I should be called naive...)

The Mrs wanted one of these things so badly so she bought one. I hate the thing because I'm naturally warm (I like my room temperature to be at 18 degrees) and the thing makes me uncomfortably hot during the night. I did see on the label that there is a Winter side and a Summer side, so we flipped to the Summer side which helped a little. It wasn't so bad in the Summer because I sleep on top of the duvet with a sheet over me.

If I had my way we'd be rid of it. I can't say it improved my sleep any and if I was to be honest my sleep has been worse since we've had it.
  • What purpose do you think it is not fit for?

It is to go on a bed to sleep on - I am sure it makes no promises as to what temperature that would be at.

I don't think you are going to win this one.

I suppose I think that a product that makes 2 people profusely uncomfortable and sweat as not fit for purpose as it doesn't provide for a "restful" sleep as outlined on the product's packaging.
  • A restful nights sleep is quite subjective, although I take your point.

Give it a whirl and see what they come up with.

I know it is a long shot as it is not like the mattress lost all of its foam. But a nicely worded letter may help my cause.
