missing barclays loan agreement

Little bit of help needed - I have the loan agreement number for my barclays loan which finished in 1998. I have requested a copy of the loan agreement but have had a letter back from Barclays to say that they cannot find a copy of the agreement due to the age. Would a SAR be of any use? I managed to find the loan agreement by requesting copies of my old bank statements (so they must have some paperwork as some of the statements went back to 1998). I am not sure when it is best to send a SAR. I have been looking at the forum and just manage to confuse myself. Am I wasting my time??
Many thanks for any help.

If they have told you they cant find it then a SAR wont change that. The debt is long gone and its not uncommon for them to destroy their copy or file it in a non relevant filing system shortly after.
1998 was 13 years ago. So, it would not be unexpected to find documentation no longer exists.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I have found the Dublin office to be helpful. Have you tried phoning them?
Found this under FAQ on Barclays website
"In addition, for Payment Protection Insurance claims for overdrafts, Barclaycard and mortgages, you can call Barclays Insurance Dublin on 0500 500 700, Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm. Textphone: 0870 400 4855. Disability helpline: 0870 400 4854."
Also In their Overdraft Payment Protection Policy Document (also on their website but hidden) it states;
" 7. Data protection
You have a right to see personal information which is held by Barclays Insurance(Dublin) Limited or Barclays Assurance (Dublin) Limited. There is a charge if you want to do this. For more details write to

Alternatively you may contact the underwriters directly by calling 0500 500 700*, by faxing 0870 400 4865."
