Chickens

  • I just bought an automatic door for my chooks, well I say I bought it but the chickens bought it with the money they made selling their eggs, save me getting up at first light to open the coup. My chickens are so thoughtful!
While I was watching to check the door closed ok I saw a rat so I thought I'll put the chooks food in the shed so the rat wouldn't get it. I still need to get up now at first light to get the food out. How unthoughtful is that rat!
Rat traps now ordered from amazon (they sell everything!) coming Monday so watch out ratty (just incase your reading this)

Dust baths are not purely for summer - I have a "dust bath" set up in my walk in run and they enjoy that just as much in the winter as summer. It helps clean their poopy bottoms, gets between their feathers and is general good entertainment/boredom reducing activitiy. (Dust baths are not just for summer/mites ;) )

Yes, dust baths are useful, happy behaviour at any time, but there's been such wet weather for the past two months that we've been unable to provide the usual one.

Instead, we've relied on the diatoms puffed into fresh shavings inside the hen shed, which many of the hens bathe in.

Others still prefer to go outside and have a 'bath' though, which in the circumstances, has been on some south facing paving slabs! It looks pretty uncomfortable, but I suppose the concrete picks up a bit of warmth during the day.

Davesnave - I forget not everyone has my set up :o My girls have a roof over the run so it's quite protected and the dust bath doesn't get wet.

Ouch, that concrete bath doesn't sound comfy at all :rotfl:
