Damp patch on lounge wall

Options
Hi all, I've just noticed a damp patch on my lounge wall and I'm after ideas as to what the cause could be. The damp patch is about 2ft across and about 6ft up the wall. It's an external wall and I don't think there are any water pipes in the wall (but not 100%.

I thought maybe the damp is coming from outside - the pointing is a bit iffy. Any ideas?

is it close to outside guttering? does the room gent ventilatation?
  • No its not near to outside guttering, we're an end terrace and the wall in question is the gable end.

Room is reasonably well ventilated I think, either way though, the level of ventilation has not changed in the room in 3 years but the damp patch has only just appeared!

If the pointing is iffy, your answer is there. If it's halfway up the wall it's penetrating damp.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Thanks for the info, just wanted to check there's nothing else to consider, I'll Google penetrating damp, doesn't sound too good though! If I get the pointing sorted will it just dry out eventually or do I need to do anything else?

I have known of a case with a couple of patches of what appeared to be damp on an outside wallpapered wall.

When the paper was stripped off, there were patches where someone had attempted to clean off gloss paint from paint brushes.

These were cleaned off and no further trouble. We assumed it was condensation.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Never seen any real evidence of it but I have read some people claiming that damp can travel over cavity wall insulation.
As surely as night follows day capitalism will come crumbling down. On a mission to secure a just and ethical society.
