If my website was down when the googlebot last came and crawled the site could that account for me suddenly dropping completely down by 16 pages on some of my key search terms ?
I went away 2 weekends ago and whilst away I didn't know that my site was completely down for several days, probably about 4 in all. Anyway I've now discovered I've dropped from page 1 to page 16 on several very significant search terms, do you think it could be what has happened or is it more likely because of that latest google alogorithm change which happened in January ?

More than likely it was the latest update as a few sites lost out on some keywords. Best thing to do is start a link campaign with relevent sites to yours to build it back up.0

something has changed with the google algorithms lately, it's not just your site affected, plenty of other peoples' are, including some of mine are too, and, annoyingly, some aren't, which makes it harder to work out the trend (and the strategy to combat it!).
everyone is banging on about more backlinks but be careful from where they come. one of my url's had paid backlinks to it, and i suspect that is a contributory factor to its drop from the serps.
safest bet is the one thing google will always rate - keep adding unique, useful user content. pages where i have unique content consistently rank, those with duplicated content or affiliate links tend to suffer (unless i use google adwords).
hope that helps!Posts are not monitored but signatures are!0 -
Thanks ever so much for the advice and info, I can't believe I've dropped so far down in one foul swoop. Mind you at least the most expensive products are still listing on page 1 for their keywordsIf you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun:cool:

Its happens, update you index with new content, use alt text on your images and leave, youll find it will rise, also find/buy text links back to your site, blogs are a good way to. I have have many business sites I do SEO work for and they always in top 10 for big search terms, you just have to treat google like a dog.Kind Regards

Look at the cached page in google for the page you used to rank page1 for... if that cached page shows your website down, then that's probably the reason your rankings have dropped. In which case, once you're respidered you'll go back up.
If the cached page in google shows your current pages and site as up, then it's something else; quite likely the recent update. In which case following the above advice and cracking on with a link building campaign is the way to go.
Hope this helps

I currently have a website to be launched...in a market that is out there, could you expand more on the text links scenario, i.e buying...is this google adwords..
don`t want to try that route yet, have used it before and watched the money go south!

No i mean buy paying a webmaster money to place your link in there site, There are many out there. Get around 20-30 link page rank of 4 or higher sites to get in top 10 of around 20 million results. Alt text and good content will help to. Try get in http://dmoz.org/ as that helps. This will all help get higher rankings, also make sure you have spiderable pages, all with different meta tags and all different page titles, remove repeated words in titles to. There is a lot to learn, im learning all the time, as search engines change about ever 3-4 months.Kind Regards

Thanks ever so much for the great advice everyone
I found the old page and clicked on cached on google and it bought up this message
Not Found
The requested URL /index.html?lang=en-uk&target=d2_01.html+wooden+letters&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=209&gl=uk was not found on this server.
SO does that indicate I was spidered when the site was down ? I take it that is what it means anyway and hope thats the explanationIf you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun:cool:

There you go then; once google spiders that page your rankings should revert back to what they were.
While you're waiting keep linkbuilding, it's an ongoing process.
