when to stop paying csa

hi my step daughter is 19 in november, she is currently doing a two year course, but got held back a year, as her grades wernt good enough.

I got told via the csa that the payments would stop either september, or november this year, but speaking to my step daughter today , the payments will stop a year in september as she was held back a year.

Anyone got any idea when this will be, we are paying a substantial amount as on the old system, yet we are struggling day to day, as we also have four children of my own to support. Not trying to shirk responsibilities, but have counted this down for ten years, so bit perplexed to find it may be another year of payments.

My children, arnt able to go into further education, as unable to fund it, we dont qualify for any help.

A second problem, my step daughter and her mum dont get on, she has moved into mine once, but she had 21 days in which to move back home before the csa would stop payments, she went back home on the dead line, her mother offered her half of the weekly payments in pocket money, she paid two payments so now back to square one, only now the step daughter is demanding we give her the pocket money as, she is entitled to it, and since her mum wont give it we should.... my kids dont get a penny pocket money, there is nothing to give.

Sorry for the ramble, very annoyed and very upset

thank you

Unless the qualifying child has a registered disability then payments will stop on the Monday following her 19th birthday regardless of the length of her course.

If you are already paying your laibility under the CSA then there is no obligation to pay her any more money, if the mother agrees then you can make a private arrangement and get the CSA case closed and pay 50% to the mother and 50% to the child - but only if the mother closes the case.

On the old case (and you have my sympathy because thats what we were on - and like you counting the months down!) you should still get a reduction in payments for your 4 children. Also there are college burseries available to them if they wish to go into further education, there is a grant checker available on this site :)

thank you for your prompt reply,

since i am not thinking straight, can u just clarify that the payments stop the monday following her 19th birthday, and that i have read that right.

Myhubby is on the old case, i am on the new case, we are on a lose lose situation :/,,,, my four seem to lose out either case. such is life i suppose.

Are you paying the parent with care directly or thru the Csa?

Your liability to pay ends in line with the child's 19th birthday, but through the Csa payments are made in arrears, so you're always paying the week just gone. If its through the Csa I'd give them a call tonight to make sure the case has been flagged for closure.

The sooner you do it the better - QCs turning 19 should be flagged up about a month in advance, but due to workload there's no guarantee that anyone will have looked at it yet, best to ring them and give them a little nudge...

ok just rang them, got given another number to ring (sigh)!
they have now said it will be flagged and passed to the closure dpt and not to stop paying just incase there is arrears (there is none?)
she then said i would get a call back by a case worker within 5 days who would advise.
But the whole process could take 15 weeks ? whats that all about? if i dont have to pay anymore but they want my hard earned in their bank account!
she did say they would refund any over payments back to me but i would bet that will probably take another 15 weeks !

    WHAT A JOKE THEY ARE.

How are you currently paying, weekly standing order?

If you're positive that there are no arrears I would make one final payment on Thursday next week, and then cancel the standing order.

hi sorry for the late reply!

yes as i`m self employed i pay them by standing order, i was paying arrears off about a year ago and i had the exact date when all would be square and then make normal payments, only i made a mistake on the month that the standing order to come out, straight away as soon as they realised i had not payed they was on the phone!! i paid it there and then and adjusted the standing order, so i know for a fact i have no arrears!!

i was thinking the same thing to just stop it (i might put it in a spare account just in case), but when to stop it? this thursday or the next?

Personally I'd stop it next Thursday, by the sounds of it your liability will probably end this week, so that way there might be a refund due to you once they finally close the case at their end.
