Help, painting disaster!

Options
A couple of years ago we replastered the spare room and painted over it. All was good until this weekend, we have decided to paint over it. Disaster because the fresh paint is bubbling and is pulling off the paint underneath. Hubby is up there with a scraper scraping all the new paint (as well as the old paint) off.

Now what have we dont wrong? We dont want to make the same mistake again.

What type of paint was on there originally, what have you put on now and was your plaster PVA'd [it should not have been].

Did you also sugar soap the walls first? I didn't one time and the same happened to me, It also could have been silk emulsion used last time, whcih is hard to go over again. Been there got the T shirt

The original plaster wasn't prepped properly so the paint didn't adhere to it properly so the new paint is just taking it off. Its a scraper it job I'm afraid as you have already found out. If you take it all off back to the bare plaster then use a mistcoat first Where (if) the old paint has stuck then quick abrade first.

    Cheers.

Lining paper and emulsion may be your best bet now then.

As far as i can remember, the walls werent sugar soaped or even pva'd.
It is nt necessary to sugarsoap fresh plaster. PVA is an absolute no-no as DV has alraedy noted. Glad you didn't.
Not sure of the paint we put on originally (wasnt emulsion............. it could very well have been a silk emulsion.
    Eh?

    Cheers

Go with McKneff's suggestion. Don't use the 800 grade carp lining paper from the sheds - its useless. Minimum 1200 if not 1400.

vinyl silk emulsion. Like i said, i'm not sure what paint he used on the walls but it wasnt emulsion or a gloss.
The two bolded elements of this post remain mutually exclusive.

In any event - think yourself lucky. Matt won't stick if applied straight over silk and it would have crazed so you would have been having to do it all over anyway.

Silk on walls is bl oo dy awful, paintwork yes, but stick with matt over really good quality lining paper.

Dont, under any circumstances buy B & Q's own emulsion, buy cheap, buy twice and twice the labour lol, Johnsons One Coat is good.

    Will stick to Matt then.

Oh and thanks for the heads up about B&Q's own emulsion.... guess what we bought? :o

    They will take it back...........hurry.......

It is total crap, my OH was a decorator for 44 years, I came home with it, he jumped up and down, he tried it, it took 3 coats. Its okay now, but we did the bedroom and bought Johnsons 1 coat and it did exactly what it said on the tin. 1 coat. I was back in his good books:D
