Flying with baby & pram/pushchair

Options
Hi there

We are flying for the 1st time next week with our 3 month old daughter- only a short flight to Plymouth with Air South West

Now I e-mailed them to see what we do about the pram/pushchair arrangements and they said that we were OK to keep the pram with us until the foot of the steps of the plane and then it will be put in the hold.

But my only thoughts are that our pram/pushchair is pretty chunky (it's a Britax travel system) and was wondering how the heck something like that would get through airport security as surely it will need to be X-rayed??

Wondered if anyone else had experiences??

Cheers

D

They will do the x-raying and stuff (if they deem it neccessary) when they check your hand luggage, so dont worry about that. You wont be the first with a big pushchair!

Essentially, get some large elastic type things to go round the push chair to keep it together (like the camping type elactic ties or purpose luggage ones to go round suitcases) The clips on the push chair will not be enough alone to cope with baggage men chucking it around. Also, make sure you have some labels to put on it when you leave it at the steps too - just in case.

hey dondo we've travelled with harri (who's now 18 months) for the past 12 months. every time we flew, they let us take the buggy through security and then dump it at the steps to the plane. then when we landed, the ground staff left it at the bottom of the steps for when we got off again - it really is as easy as that. you just have to make sure you mention it when you board the plane and then get off again. the staff are usually pretty clued-up though.

when you check in and go through security they make you take the baby out of the pushchair and then fold it up (the pushchair, that is!), usually we've had to then put ours (pushchair) through the x-ray machine. once that's done you can then use it again up to the point when you board the aircraft but we usually keep ours folded until we leave it at the aircraft steps, as there are usually stairs down to the tarmac, somewhere!

    bon voyage!

Thanks for this- unfortunate thing is we need the car seat for when we get there

But it's a robust pushchair/pram/travel system so fingers crossed it will survive

When I flew from Newcastle with my son in a pushchair, we had a lovely security man. He explained he needed to check the buggy, so he took it to one side, and watched me go through the body scanner. Then he made checking the buggy into a game, by tickling my son and playing "peek a boo" as he felt round the pushchair. I thought that was a lovely thing to do.
Here I go again on my own....

Is it not just the buggy that is 'free' and put in the hold? The car seat will be separate if the pushchair is collapsed, and (if I was told correctly) it has to travel separately and incurs a charge.

Not sure to be honest- will make sure that the car seat is covered under our baggage allowance/weight limits just to make sure

It depends whether your airline charges by the item or by weight.

We have flown with our (now 15 month old) daughter several times with no problems, but we've never had to take a car seat with us so it's just been the buggy getting transported for free. We've never taken any special elastic thingies or whatever - they've just chucked it into the hold and it's come out the other end OK. :)
