Nursing Students - Biology Books

I am struggling with the biology side of the course (long time out of school, not the best of lecturers) and someone has recommended I get one of the colouring in books (not convinced but willing to try anything!) Reading and listening has not worked, so will give this a go. Exams in May so plenty of time to try something else if this fails.

Have had a look on the internet and was thinking about Ross and Wilson Anatomy and Physiology but need a book that covers the cells and DNA as I really, really struggle here and dont want to have to buy two books. Cannot find any links on the internet that says what topics are covered in the book and not sure if it is just A&P.

Can anyone recommend a book of this type for me?

Thanks

Go to your uni library and have a browse at the A+P books in there. Different people find they prefer different ones, I like the Ross and Wilson, and it comes with access to some online resources which are useful, but some people really dislike it.

You could also get an A level revision book for human biology, as this will be at a slightly easier to understand level and then once you've got the hang of that you can progress further.

I've just had my first A+P exams and am waiting nervously to find out if I've passed, so you have my sympathies! There's an awful lot to take in.

Definitely recommend the Ross and Wilson colouring book. Sounds pathetic I know but it really does help if you're not the sit, read and take it all in type learner.

You can get some good deals on amazon. If you're after the actual Ross and Wilson text book as well then I wouldn't worry about getting the latest edition. An old one will do the same job.

I had my last A+P exam back in September and honestly I wouldn't have gotten through it if it weren't for that colouring book
  • I have gone for the Ross & Wilson colouring book. Was relieved to see it includes a sections for cells so will make a start on that and hope that some information will finally start to sink in. Thanks for your replies.

Good to see there is some anatomy back in the courses. When I trained 20 years ago, they taught physiology with flow diagrams and we didn't do any anatomy at all! Consequently some colleagues qualified without knowing where to find the liver, and even 20 years later a quick check of my friends at a barbecue last summer showed, none of them (6 nurses) knew where the kidneys were! We are all band 6,7 and 8 nurses!

That makes no sense, how can you understand physiology with no knowledge of anatomy!

You should tell that to a few of the people who are so vehemently opposed to nurses being educated in university.

The Uni I am at bought an e-book version of the Marieb A&P book. We can access it free of charge and have it downloaded on different computers. Don't know if your Uni does the same?

I bought the Ross & Wilson books (textbook and colouring book). I went to the library and looked at the ones they had and decided which ones I like.

It is useful to have an e-book but I like having a physical book to hold and flick through.
