Technical numpty here...
I'm looking for a 'low end' video recorder, something which also records sound (Do they all do that? See I don't even know!).
Can anyone recommend something which is not too complicated?
Oh and will they all record at night?

You have a few options.
You may still be able to buy a conventional video recorder or purchase a second-hand one. Tapes will be difficult to buy now and not suitable for long-term archival.
The other options are:- DVD recorder
- Hard-drive recorder
- Hard-drive/DVD recorder
- Solid-state recorder
The cheapest option will probably be a standard video recorder! If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
Shame you didn't post earlier. I threw a video recorder and a pile of tapes in a skip last week.
All the factories have switched to DVD and Blu-ray so videos are no longer mass produced. Consequently, the price has gone through the roof.
What do you want it for?
If just to watch programmes at a different time, get a PVR (basically, a hard drive which records the programme so you can access it when you want).
If you want to record and keep, get a DVD recorder.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0 -
a house clearer i know cant sell these because everyones gone digital so he puts them in his wee container so if you ask him im sure he would give you one free gratis, ive got a top of the tree sony off him for my dining room,we watched the sound of music on videotape and the quality was excellent again tapes are free from him because none wants them
or look on freecycle
if you are looking to do video surveillance then i buy my 5 hour vhs tapes from maplins so they do 10 hours in long play

Aye, sorry - I was talking about the machines rather than the tapes.
Ten years ago, you'd get a VCR for about £30; today you'll be lucky to find one below £100.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.

I've no idea if it's any good, but is this the sort of think you're looking for:

What do you want to record.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.
[/greenhighlight][redtitle]
The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0
