Low carb/Low GI diet

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere else.
I want to change to a low carb, low GI diet. Can anyone point me in the right direction for diet plans, recipes, etc.
I know there is a ton of stuff on Google, but I was hoping someone would have information on diets that have actually worked for them.
As I can't afford to buy food for two different kinds of diets, it would need to be something that firstly was cheap, and secondly was suitable for children (youngest aged 10). Also it'd need to include items that could be used for packed lunches.
It's not for weight loss, although that'd be a bonus, it's to control type 2 diabetes.
Any help gratefully received.

Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

There is no special foods with the GI diet and no real diet changes, just a case of cutting down on some things (white bread, rice) and bumping intake of others (meat, veg, certain fruits). There are some amazing books out there that you should be able to get for cheap.
I'm sorry I am not more helpful but there is so much information on the GI diet. And I found that there is a difference between doing GI to lose weight and doing it for health reasons. In fact I think there are a couple of books aimed at the GI diet for health reasons.0 -
It's not and you should really nip on & say hello. We can help you with any questions you have & we have some great recipes.thanks tod123, but that seems to be just chatter, talking about hair dyes and such. oh well Google it is
If you read the last 4-5 pages or so you will see.
We are a family of 5 who low carb & family meals are not a problem, it does take preplanning just like all from scratch cooking does really.Life is short, smile while you still have teeth

You could always buy a book on the subject.
Plenty in the bookshops or Amazon if you can't be bothered to go out.
BTW I've just found the Low carb support forum and I think it's rather useful. New things discovered in the last two days... low carb cauli rice/mash, pavlova, ice cream, sausages. The list goes on. Of course, not every post will be relevant to your own particular situation but, overall, it seems to be a excellent resource.0 -

Have a look at Viv's diet on here - https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=18803&sid=1a5289a6e48ceaadd2a8e0463aa09f9c
Whatever you do, pick one version of low-carb and stick with it for a little while. Once you're familiar with it, you can branch out a bit and try some of the different versions.0 -

Im a recently diagnosed diabetic too (type 1) and I know what a minefield it can be!
I have to count the carbs in every meal to calculate the right dose of insulin. I feel much more aware of food and its contents now!
So far, in terms of keeping blood glucose stable, I find that complex carbs are great (usually that means brown... Brown pasta, rice, wholemeal bread, whole grain cereal etc)
If you eliminate simple carbs ie the white stuff, you should be able to maintain good control. Too few carbs and you may experience hypos (urgh, horrible experience!) I know I speak as a type 1 and it's a bit different, but since switching to complex carbs and cutting simple carbs my control has been much better and the docs are really pleased with my numbers!
I don't know how long you've been suffering with diabetes but I really do sympathise with you. It's not easy!
Take care0 -
Take a look at the thread, don't just dismiss it! The first few pages contain loads of receipes and ideas. TBH I bought the Atkins book and followed it for a while but now I've reintroduced carbs, I just reduce quanities and not exclude them completely. I've maintained the weight loss too. I do what the above posters says, white bread however delicious is actually evil. Just remember that and you should do okay!0
