If you don't want your cat to be involved in an accident then close doors, put fitted nets over windows that you need to leave open so the cat cannot climb through them, and cat-proof your garden/build a cat run. If you can guarantee 100% that your cat is either in your house or in your garden then it won't be out in the road.
Otherwise if you choose to let it roam then you have to accept that an accident may happen. Accidents are just that - accidents, you have to hope they don't happen but be prepared that they might, unless you make them impossible.0 -
I think its cruel to keep them in all the time, I just want him to stay local.0

You can "want" but it won't stop him wandering into a road if that's what he wants to do at the time. You have a choice - keep him inside and know he's safe, let him roam and take the chance that he might get in an accident one day, that's all you can do. There are lots of cat-proofing solutions that can allow the cat to have access to a garden rather than be confined to just a house.0 -
On another note, I was thinking about getting another cat, when I drive around some cats seem to have really good road sense , where as other seem to just walk across the road without a care in the world, rather like a fox does.
Are there known breads that are better at roads , or are some cats just a bit dumb?0 -
Yep all cats are different some are nervy and others are really laid back, theres not a lot you can do, does he stay in at night as that would minimise the risk a bit.0

Pumpernickel is German so quite sensible. Baguettes are French so a bit careless. And Panini, being Italian, are just plain reckless. (Couldn't resist.)
You said your cat is 14. Most cats are happy to stay in the warm and be waited on when thhey get to that age. Mr Bluey must be in good nick for his age.
Is he a Russian Blue by any chance? They are lovely natured cats and don't wander. You should consider one. They can be quite vocal and meow a lot but are very affectionate.:dance:We're gonna be alright, dancin' on a Saturday night:dance:0 -
