hi we join with eon energy 18 months ago we have a prepayment meter and we didn't know that we wern't being charged for the electric my wife thought i had been oping it up and i thought she had.
we got a phone call just before christmas to tell us we owed them £958 for electric but as I explained that it was thier fault they were the ones who let it go this long they say the tryed to contact us 5 times in recent months about this and could not get a response.
they are going to take the debt back at £10 a week from my meter but we cant afford this and they are not budging they wont let us move suppliers as we have a debt.
do we need to pay them back as it was and is thier fault

Hi barryrhodes
I'm sorry you're struggling to pay the debt on the meter. I would talk to us again about this. Tell us why you're struggling. It may be possible to reduce the weekly payments, particularly if there's vulnerability at the property.
Sounds as though you originally had a credit meter which was then replaced with a prepayment meter because of a debt.
Before going down the prepayment route for debt, we try to contact the customer on many occasions including writing, phoning and visiting.
Bills are also sent out which show any debt increasing. The exception to this is if you registered your account with our website.
If you did, you wouldn't have received paper bills. Instead, bills would have been available to view online. Emails are sent advising when a bill is ready to view.
As the debt is in excess of £900, I'm afraid we'll more than likely block attempts to change supplier. This will change once the debt falls below £200.
Once it does, you'll be able to transfer the debt to another supplier.
Sorry I can't offer anything more positive but hope this points you in the right direction. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

Yes, it is their 'fault', but they're still allowed to correct the error to recoup what you owe.
Invariably the estimate of consumption works in your favour, and a recovery period of nearly two years is very reasonable on a debt that has built up in less than 18 months.
Presumably you have some savings accumulated as a result of neither of you having topped up?No free lunch, and no free laptop0
