Average time for new HMRC ID and password

I sat down this afternoon with everything I need to do my tax return.
Everything sorted out and nicely organised. Knew it would take me less than 30 minutes and exactly what I had to pay.

Put my hand to where the ID and password were and....nothing. Gone. Disappeared. I remember the piece of paper. I can see ID and password both in black marker. Cannot find the bit of paper.

I have turned the place upside down for the last four hours. Nothing. I've been through every scrap of paper I have. I've even been up in the archive boxes in the loft.

If I phone the tax office at 8am Monday morning how long on average is it taking for a new number and password to turn up at the moment?

    That's what I'm fearing. Bu**er it.

Hubby has joined in the hunt now.

EDITED TO ADD: I don't recall having an issue like this a few years ago when I lost them both before. I've been back through my emails to 2008/09 and found the resets and reminder emails for a new ID and new password one email after the other within about 20 minutes of each other.

Has HMRC changed the online form so now so you can't get the information for one without the other? All I would have had last time without the ID and password was my UTR, NI number and postcode?

On the letter to me it said make sure you create your account / apply for your PIN etc before today, 21st January, as it can take up to 10 days (inc weekends) to arrive. I applied for mine on the 17th and it came this morning. If you apply now you might have the letter by Tuesday or Wednesday. I personally think you'll be OK if you request the reminder now, you should get it in the post before 31st, but it's not guaranteed.

EDIT: Actually applied on the night of 17th January not the 19th, so it took 4 days.
  • Sorry to hijack your thread but just had a panic. I only registered September 2011, are you submitting for tax year ending April 2011? I shouldn't be doing anything should I?

Hope you find your letter or get one sent through in time!

You've given me some hope there..thank you!

Hubby reckons I've put it somewhere safe so I'd know where it was. So safe I can't remember.

I did that back in 2008/09 which is why I had to apply for new ones.

No you're ok. If you only registered as self-employed in September you'll need to do a tax return for 2011/12 in the next tax year which starts April 5th 2012.

If you have lost both the user id and the password. phone the online services helpdesk

not on the phone number quoted in a following post as that will put you through to the tax office to talk about the tax, not the issue of a user id / password

    Online Services 0845 605 5999
select option 6 - then on the next menu (I know!)
select option 5 for an adviser

request the issue of an id and password, part of it will be sent via email, part by royal mail.

As you have previously registered, ensure that your return is filed online by the 14th Feb in order to avoid any penalty.

As you say you know what to pay, make the payment by the 31st January to avoid any interest.

    Cheers.

I did consider making the payment anyway and err on the generous side to be sure I had covered it all.

When you get it, I suggest emailing the details to yourself so that you can find them next time you put them in a safe place!

I lost mine as well - the first digit of my ID is 4 and it is stored on my computer on the login page - if you can remember the first digit or try 1-9 then thismay bethe case for you also.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
