Record digital channels!

I have a Toshiba 32WLT66 digital television and a Samsung DVDD5600W DVD/VCR combi but, not being technically minded, can't figure out how to record digital channels!:o

I currently record from the analogue signal but find there are lots of programmes on digital channels that I would like to tape. Can anyone help with an idiot's guide on how to do this?

I have the same TV, but I run an LG DVD-R.

Ok, get your manual out and have a look, because I'm explaining this from memory and you might need to double check it.

    1. Run you ariel into the VCR, and from the VCR to the TV - this sorts out the TV signal to both, but might make the digital signal weaker by the time it gets to the TV.

    2. run a scart from the INPUT/OUTPUT socket on the back of the VCR into the scart socket 2 on the TV. It would also be called INPUT/OUTPUT.

    3. You should then be able to select the digital signal from the TV as a source on the VCR (on my DVD-R I can select the source by cycling through them) and record.

    BUT HERE'S THE RUB.

    1. You can only record the digital signal if you are watching the channel you are recording and the TV is on.
    2. You could record Digital, and watch Analogue, but then you're limited to 5 channels which look like junk on your nice new telly.

    SO...

You can get a PVR which is essentially a hard disc tv recorder. They're about £200 and usually have two digital decoders in them, so you can record two separate digital channels at once, whilst watching a third on your TV (which has its own decoder). They will also allow you to "pause" live TV. You can get DVD-Rs with inbuilt decoders too, but can only record one channel and are around £150.

OR you could just spend another £30 on another freeview box, and use that as the source for the VCR.

Hope this helps - if anyone has this TV and has worked out how to record the digital signal while the TV is on standby, please let us know, cos I haven't worked it out yet!

Can't believe it - it was actually very straightforward to do!!:T

Many thanks:beer: to hbl for the very clear instructions and will probably think about a cheap Freeview box as well.
  • Hi, hbl,

don't think it makes any difference what telly you're recording on, as has to come through your SKY box.

Anyway to set up the programmes to record, using Sky remote,

    press: TV guide

select: All channels or favourite channels

scroll: to whatever programme and time you want

    press: Select

    press: AutoView (red)

    press:Backup and choose more programmes.

and now set your recorder to the corresponding times as the programmes.

You can set things up for recording at any time and Sky box will jump between channels, you can also watch analogue at same time, but as you say picture is rubbish.

Huh? Sound advice I'm sure, but I don't have Sky. Just the TV and the DVD-RW.

Whatever you do, DON'T put Ariel into your VCR! It is a very aggressive biological detergent which will destroy the electronics.

(What you need is an aerial). :p
