Self-employment and PPI + can I claim and how far back can I claim?

I have two credit cards with PPI, and lived overseas for three years before receiving a letter telling me they were stopping my PPI because it was not valid for anyone outside of the UK. I had of course told them I was moving overseas and they had not mentioned this at the time. I questioned why they allowed me to carry on paying for three years, and a guy from the Insurance company called me personally and assured me that it had been valid until the date I received the letter. I was skeptical about what he told me, so wrote a letter explaining the situation and tried to claim back the past three years. My skepticism paid off, as I ended up with two nice cheques in the post having found in my favour.

Since then a relative told me that PPI was also invalid for anyone who is self-employed. Can anyone confirm this, as I was self-employed in the UK before I left the country, and if I can still claim prior to when I left the country for my period of self-employment, I would like to do so. I started self-employment in 2004.

Depends on the policy, many PPIs did / do cover SE, you'd need to check your policy documents.

Thanks for the reply, though unfortunately I have no idea where the original papers are. The credit cards were with MBNA, and whilst I know it may vary from person to person, all my research to date suggests MBNA did not cover the self-employed. I guess I can make my case, and wait for their investigation.
