Yes the recent new customer offer could have been split among existing customers but how would that have attracted significant numbers of new customers?
The £200 bonus was open to existing customers, I'm an existing customer and have made use of the offer. I have a letter which confirms that I'm eligible for the £200 providing the conditions are met.

Their current accounts and credit cards are OK.

The Barclays savings range is dire, with the exception of the "monthly savings" account, which is "OK".

Nothing wrong with the Golden ISAs which have been among the top payers for the last 3 years. OK, no transfers in and a 1 yr bonus but just transfer out and open another each April if it continues to offer a good rate.

I've banked with them for about 45 years now (including business accounts) and never had cause to complain.

I haven't had any issues with Nationwide and in fact they recently refunded an overdraft charge even though it was my miscalculation. The transfer from my business account (HSBC) to my Flexaccount takes less than 2 hours. My mortgage is with them as well and have had no issues.

THe thing is everyone is going to have a bad luck story regarding their bank and a lot of the time it's just pot luck whether you have a bad experience or not.

I rang First Direct yesterday. One easy to find number. No menus. The phone was answered within one ring and the lady who answered dealt with my query immediatly. She also spoke good English (albeit with a northern twang) Wish more companies were like this. Phone/internet companies could learn a thing or two.

god i rang up Nationwide this week and the menu is horrible - 'please say this', 'please say that',

Good to hear! Why does everyone seem to focus on the negative issues with banking?

Who really cares which bank is worst or 2nd worst?

Any organisation out there will make mistakes, it is how that organisation then deals with your complaint that matters.

You would expect the likes of Barclays/RBS Group/Lloyds Group to have the highest complaints because they have a bigger customer base. No doubt a bulk of complaints have been PPI claims also.

A bank may have received a large volume of complaints yet it could have been due to something they introduced or changed but after listening to their customers have improved it or done away with.

People have commented on here about bad experiences with Santander/Nationwide/Nat West but have not stated what the response was from the bank and what they did (if anything) to put it right.

I'm more than happy with my current bank, and yes in the past they have done things that may have frustrated me or messed me around, however they have either put it right or given me a rational explanation as to the reasons behind it.

My experiences with Santander have been fairly positive, no major problems just a few niggles. HBOS on the other hand were a total PITA, not following account opening instructions, putting money into the wrong ISA's even though the paperwork was correct. having to take ID into branch and then denying they ever saw it. Took 3 months to sort it out.

People enjoy moaning and jumping on the bandwagon I find...You have to put things into perspective too! You may come online and read 1-200 bad reviews but think how many millions bank with Santander? You can't please everyone!

Some of the complaints you read for example the fact that Nationwide refuse to open full Flexaccounts to people are due to what type of customers the bank wants to attract or the fact they can't be bothered to invest in their systems, but other complaints are basic customer service.

Even more so when you actually know personally the people they are from and why the complaint has happened.

For example in the case of Santander they seem to be incompetent. There is no excuse for them taking a long time (as in weeks) to open accounts when people present with the ID requested, when other banks can do the same process in an hour. There are other things they do which also illustrate their incompetence which other banks don't do on a regular basis.

There as in Natwest it's often the rudeness of staff that is the problem. I left Natwest due to this and continually hear stories of how rude branch staff are to family and friends. I bank with banks where the branch staff including the branch manager don't have the authorisation to do things but they are not rude to me due to this.

I know customers are difficult to deal with but when you hear more complaints about one bank about what is a basic customer service issue you know there is a problem.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
