Car Insurance & Uni Student Problem

Currently have Junior as a named driver on my insurance policy ....and yes the premiums reflect this as he's basically added £1K to the premium:eek:
Anyway my insurance is up for renewal soon but I have the problem that he will be leaving home at some point during the year - either to go to Uni or to join the Armed Forces.
If he does go to Uni, then he obviously won't have the access to the car to justify the extra expense so is there a cost effective way of insuring the car until he leaves home but will allow him to drive it when during the holidays?
(if he goes into the Armed Forces he will have more than enough money to buy his own car and pay his own insurance
)

Back when I was a small(er) boy, my mother had me as a named driver on her policy with Barclays, who took into account I was a student living away from home when rating the policy. I would ask your existing insurer if they can do this. Failing that, shop around and see if you can find something suitable. My understanding is that it took a few hundred squids off the premium.
Hope this gives you a starting point!0 -
You need to look into this carefully, Adding and removing him could cost you more in admin charges.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Thanks guys for the replies
I'm half tempted to keep him on my policy when it renews and if he does go to Uni, remove him and then if he needs to drive my car, get him insurance on one of those short term policies.....are they mega expensive?
I don't mind keeping him on the policy as it is but we're talking £100+ per month so it does at add up.2014 Target;

We have all 3 vehicles insured with same co - main users are DH, DD and I - one on each. To add DD to DH and my policies was going to cost £250 each (even though she could only drive one at a time).
Adding her when needed - when her car was in garage for week for instance - cost £1 per day!!!
I would suggest that you just add your son to your policy when needed - maybe ask insurers first for an indication of cost.0 -

Interesting!
Was this with your normal insurers or with one of those short-term Companies?2014 Target;

Normal insurer and we go via a broker because at least we can explain the position to them. The broker administers the scheme on behalf of the insurer and the insurer does not appear on the aggregator sites.
I would call your insurer, explain the position and ask them what the cost will be.0 -
£1 per day looks good value for anyone. Can you do it on a daily basis?
I need the car today - log-in, insure car, go shopping. Next day - Sunday-lie-in, car not needed.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
