Needed to do a system restore, laptop, xp sp3. Took a long time and when it booted up it got to the log in icon, pressed, and went onto the desktop with wallpaper but no icons came up. restarted but still the same.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

First why were you doing a restore?
I have seen this once, when successfully removing the "system fix" virus - if the task bar is available you may be able to get the icons back by right clicking on the task bar - and this bit I can't remember - but trial and error - properties - and try some of the options there.
This may be a total red-herring, but its the only experience I have had of a loss of desktop icons.
You could try another restore point, or even use the repair console to repair the registry.0 -
...or open task manager, go to file, new task(run), and type explorer.exe and Enter.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

...if it was due malware.
I wouldn't use system restore to "fix" a malware infection if that is what it was - dedicated malware removal tools are a far better choice. System Restore was never intended to be a solution for malware problems.0 -
Done, all screen back up and also the one to say restore has been sussceeful. Clicked finish and all back to normal. Thanks....or open task manager, go to file, new task(run), and type explorer.exe and Enter...I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
