Epliators - what's your view on them?

Hello all,
Fed up with having stubbly/hairy legs (can't be bothered to shave every shower, not much time to do it now LO is on the move), so thinking about buying an epilator. I'm looking for the long term silky loveliness without having the regrowth and cost of waxing, but want to know how painful it is and how long it takes to do your legs (I have a fairly high pain threshold but not when it comes to ripping hair out). Just don't want to waste £40 on something I might not get on with.
Any views you have, good and bad, are very welcome!
Thanks
Gefjun

There is no escaping the fact that they hurt for the first few times that you use them but they give amazing results. Last summer I ran mine over my legs every few days and was left with hair free smooth legs for the whole time. Well worth some discomfort, of course after a few uses that lessens tooTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Love mine but don't expect weeks of hair free legs - at least not initially. It takes a couple of months to get the hair growth cycles into sync so you can get them all at once. You may need to use it weekly initially.
You get used to the pain very quickly especially if you by one that has a "beginner" head as well.
It isn't that quick though - at least not initially. Nowhere near as fast as shaving or waxing.0 -
I like mine, not really any more painful than waxing just a different sensation. Mine has rechargeable batteries, not sure if they all do but this is handy so that you can use it where you want to, in good light, without the need for a plug nearbyThe birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

I have this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HP6509-Satinelle-Sensitive-Attachment/dp/B002BA5FCK
I use it probably every 3 or 4 weeks now but as others have said, you will need to use it more often to start with.
I haven't been brave enough to do my underarms yet but I use mine on my legs, bikini line, and facial hair when necessary.
You do need to exfoliate well to avoid ingrown hairs, I dry body brush before a shower and it seems to work very well.
Good luck0 -
I've just bought one - will be trying out for the first time this weekend. Gulp!Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Thanks everyone - lots of positive comments, so I think I might take the plunge! I can do weekly cycles at first - it's much better than daily/stubbly thing I have going on right now.
heretolearn - please let me know how it goes! Maybe a large glass of Dutch courage might numb the pain?!Life is what you make it. Always has been, always will be0 -
it does hurt there is no getting away from that. but its worth it.
i used mine about 2 weeks ago but ive been too lazy to get it out again so just been whizzing over my legs in the shower and even doing that (coz i didnt get all the hairs out as some were too short) has made shaving last alot longer. as my hair is so dark and coarse i shave at 9am and by 2pm i have stubble its amazing!
im going to crack on and try over this next week to get all the hairs out at some point by going over my legs ever couple of days so that for the weekend i am silky smooth for going out and getting a bit drunk for my bday!0 -

As others have said, it takes a few weeks for you to get all the hairs out together, as you'll have hair which grows in different cycles.
Don't expect super smooth results straight away!
I love my epilator though. Maybe it would help to get a wax first then you can keep on top of the regrowth with your epilator. I do this when I go on holiday; the hair is much finer and more sparse after waxing so it may help you to get used to the sensation?0 -
My Braun epilator is awesome! I'm totally used to it so it doesn't hurt. I prefer removing the hairs with their roots rather than just trimming them.
I used to wax, but in the long run an epilator would have worked out cheaper. Just make sure you get a decent one because some cheap epilators may not pluck out the smaller hairs.0 -

Not a bad idea TimBear. I have more than enough growth at the moment for a wax (sadly)! :rotfl:Life is what you make it. Always has been, always will be0
