I would agree with telboy, look for a job in commuting distance, he can afford a 6k pay cut and still be no worse off and have more time at home.

If your husband is travelling 925 miles per week and your car does 50mpg that is costing nearly £6000 in post tax earning per year- has he considered getting a job nearer home

Its not that easy to get a job in this climate. :-(
  • Oh and Op my husband commutes during the week, its not too bad . We miss him though. However if your husband could work away till you can afford a car then maybe its worth thinking about.
  • Like I said he has been looking for years, taking the fuel costs off (in effect a pay cut) even more than fuel. But just nothing, he's role is specialised and not too many around. We looked at moving near to work originally but could not afford the area and the job was way to good to refuse.

We know how much he could bring wages down and manage to live still. So it's not that he's just looking for the same salary.
  • Thanks Rebecca

maybe he could stay away cheaply whilst you saved a bit towards a new car?

One option would be for him to lodge Monday night to Friday morningsomewhere close to where he works so he'd only have to do the long commute once there on monday morning and once back after work on Friday evening. The saving in fuel would offset his lodgings but save on wear and tear on the car as well.

In the meantime try to save as much as possible for a newer or different car and remember to factor in scrap money you'll get for his current car plus any rebate on his road tax.

Not sure as you have many other options open to you. You really are between a rock and a hard place.

just checked out another thread where the subject of lodgers came up and a couple of posters suggested checking out these sites:

    easyroommate

    monday-to-friday

    and

    crashpadder

    Might be worth looking into.
