Coffee on a budget?

Options
I've always loved coffee especially filter coffee but since leaving home at 21 I've had to make do with instant which is all I've been able to afford.

OH being lovely as usual decided to treat me to a coffee maker for Xmas, it's been brilliant and I've been enjoying trying different coffee, all great except it's really not cheap. I don't want to go back to instant and don't want to upset OH by making him think he bought the wrong thing and he should've spent the money elsewhere but can't afford to keep buying filter either.

I have tried the range that Aldi do at £1.99 each which is the cheapest I've seen so far but was hoping you lovely MSEs could recommend cheaper coffee that's just as nice.

I'd also like to try a few flavoured syrups but don't know where to start, the few I've seen have been around £10, I wouldn't mind £3-4 if it lasts a while and just use it now and again, again any suggestions?

Sainsburys do a basic filter coffee that is nice. I buy that and then just have a mid afternoon latte every day with half strong filter coffee and half hot milk and use instant the rest of the time. Feels like a nice treat doing that. No idea on the syrups as I don't fancy those.
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

I have bought Douwe Egberts from Poundworld and Lyons ground coffee from 99p store. I think the packs are 150g or 200g cant remember which. Those are the cheapest I've found and perfectly ok, we dont buy instant any more. Have a Dolce Gusto machine but cant afford the pods at the moment!

Aldi also have a "Rich Roast" one at £1.75. I just opened my first packet this morning and it's not bad. It's a different range from the £1.99 ones but (in my store at least) is next to them on the shelf.

I've been buying Lidl Bellaroma Gold for a while now but my Lidl has closed down.
  • 99p Store do 125g packs of Douwe Egberts for all coffee makers. Last time someone started a thread about filter/ground coffee this one actually worked out the cheapest.

Home Bargains have packs of Lyons and Douwe Egberts for 99p too
  • If you have a Costa coffee near you they were selling the syrups in trial sizes for about £5.99 for 5 bottles.
You can also find the same ones on the internet...Ebay etc
I really only like the vanilla syrup, but they have the hazelnut and caramel ones in there as well.
They are made by Monin who are well known for their coffee syrups.

  • If you have one nearby, Ikea of all places do a really nice coffee in their food section and it's only about a quid. I also noticed Sainsburys are selling vanilla and amaretto syrups for about £3 ish

Sainsbury's Basics is very mild, imv...it doesn't make the best cup of coffee when you're drinking it straight, but would probably be very nice with the syrups.

Another Aldi coffee fan here. :)
