The general gist I'm getting from the majority is that it's not worth taking any further and that my best bet is to just take it on the chin and avoid Samsung Fridge Freezers and purchasing from KitchenScience!

Even though my appliance has a history of breaking down (compressor replaced within 8 months) you seem to be saying that despite the possibility of an inherant fault from the start, if I could prove the fault was always there, any compensation just is not worth the effort.

Ah well, the hunt for a quality Fridge Freezer with a reputation for a reasonable life begins!:(

There is no point avoiding anything or particular make, you will find thease boards littered will faulty appliances from every brand at every price point. You will also find that the larger retailers are no better than anyone else when it come to faulty goods and know the fact you need the report so will insist on it. After 4 years they will certainly make you do the hard part.
  • whats the fault? as samsung are repairing for free if the fault is to do with the fridge part fan not working

Hi, My Samsung Fridge Freezer, purchased Dec 2007, has just packed up for the second time. First time was Aug 2008 and now same fault has occurred. I've sent a Sale of Goods Act 1979 letter to the retailer who has turned round and said effectively 'tough luck, pay us to fix it' and even though I cited the repair in August 2008, they are saying there was no fault within 6 months of purchase and they are not liable. I maintain that less than 4 years is not an accepted working life for a £499 appliance!
Any suggestions what further action I could take?
    Thanks
    Rich
i have the same problems bought my samsung american style fridge ,
the fridge keeps freezing over spoiling all the food. they have fixed it twice and still awaiting to called since december 15th 2011.

Rang them every week get put on hold, no ones rings back. rang salesline finally answered, now freezer isnt working all my food has defrosted.
They say wont give me my replace fridge only give correctly value, after years and months trying get them to call out.
After nearly two years she offer me a food voucher 50 pounds, i wasted thousand pounds of food.

what can we do to get them to replace fridges or money back !!!!

In this case yes. Several things are against you:

    1. SOGA goes from when you first bought the unit not when it was repaired so you're in your 5th year of ownership.
    2. You would have to prove there is a fault which would be covered by SOGA (this doesn't always need an "Engineers report") but it's difficult to see what else you could use in this case and this would initially be at your cost.
    3. The retailer could successfully argue the engineers report is wrong.
    4. Even if the admit they are at fault they could get away with only paying you the "intrinsic" value of the unit. Which is another argument to have about what that is, even if you win and argument that it should be the 2nd hand value it'll be what, £50 for a 5 year old fridge freezer?

I wouldn't usually buy another unit from a manufacturer I had had such problems with although you may have been unlucky and Samsung may be the most reliable.

As far as other retailers go there seem to be more complaints about service and repairs at Comet than any other in my opinion.
