Virgin - 0808 numbers free?

We've just yesterday swapped from a BT landline and O2 broadband to Virgin cable (10MB on internet, and weekend calls and phone line rental).
When we signed up, we had thought that calling 0808 numbers (to access another phone provider, such as "call1899" for making calls midweek, and abroad ) would be free. However, when I called Virgin today to confirm, they told me it would be 10p per minute.
Searching the internet, I find conflicting responses about whether you pay to call an 0808 number from Virgin. Can anyone confirm?

You obviously got hold of another poorly-trained call centre monkey who probably had never heard of the 0808 prefix and had no idea that they, together with 0800 and 0500, are freephone numbers.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Thanks you Heinz that is reassuring to know.
The Virgin guy on the phone didn't seem sure about very much - we haven't yet received any paperwork with call charges detailed, and he was unable to tell me whether we'd get a paper copy in the post, or just need to rely on the online PDF list of call charges on the website, which doesn't include anything specific for 0808 - although it does say 0800 numbers are free. Thanks for the confirmation. I had kind of wondered if I called back again whether I would get a different reply!0 -
Look here Page 13 http://shop.virginmedia.com/content/dam/allyours/pdf/010911_Non%20geo_V1.pdf and your see 0808 calls are free.0

Thank you jhp - really helpful - I had been looking on the virgin website, and a different PDF document, which didn't list the 0808 - thanks so much for that confirmation0
