M.O.T advisories last year had 7 this year 2?

Just a quick question really,
Had my car's MOT done last year and it failed so we puts bits right to get it passed which it did but it had at least 7 advisories, I had not corrected the advisories but at a different garage my MOT passed with 2 advisories? How can they be different? Don't get me wrong i am not complaining but I get the distinct feeling that the 1st garage which is a well know branded garage were ripping me off thinking about it the same (1st) garage failed my car the year before too!

One mans 2/3rds worn brake disc is another mans 33.3% wear left.

MOT testing is not science, more of a feeling on the day by the tester.

  • I had 3 brake pipes slightly corroded and rear brake linkage stiff as advisories last MOT. Current MOT no advisories apart from small oil leak.

I've had the same water pump coolant leak advisory for 2 years running. Fact it needs topping up every 6 months with about 150-300ml of water, but the coolant residue they keep finding has been there as long as I can remember, looks as though someone removed/changed the thermostat housing (above the water pump) without draining the system....... Have even had the cambelt covers off to look for leaks and found nothing out of place.

I guess short of cleaning the engine block to remove the old residue or changing MOT testers, it'll keep getting picked up.

An advisory is a way of the tester indicating that he saw something but it wasn't a fail. Some testers use it to record things which are a matter of opinion - so that if a VOSA inspector checks up on a car, they can see that the tester was aware.

A friend with a very old car always gets the advisory 'no seat belts fitted' - just the tester noting the fact in case there was ever a query.
  • Easy answer is test is done by humans so will advise different things.

I say tyres are fine you advise they need doing soon.
Google gives you answers use it.........
