I'd also recommend you get an icon airflow fan (I have two in my house), the 30 model, not 15. Get it with the humidistat, and then get it wired so that it doesn't come on with the light. Set the timer to something reasonable ~ 10 mins say. If its triggered by the humidity sensor it will stay on until the humidity has dropped regardless of time, or if you trigger it via the pull cord, it'll come on for the set time interval.

If you get it installed above the bath, I believe you'll need a 12V model or it must be wired into a RCD - an electrician can confirm on the specifics. 12V models tend to be more expensive. In fact that might just be the general requirement for installation in the bathroom full stop.
  • I will look into the Icon Airflow 30 but with the humidity sensor. I don't really want a pullcord, so can I get this to work with a humidity sensor, can you set the sensor to a certain level if that makes sense?
  • A cheaper solution is to put a little cold into the bath first then top up with hot, stops all that condensation forming
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

Yes, all the humidity fans have a little adjuster to all the % humidity to be set on them, normally its tucked away on the inside.

Another thing to watch for is to get a fan with an auto-shutter - when its off it closes the vents to cut down on any draughts - the airflow series do this. On the outside make sure you fit a cover with flaps like this: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Electrical/Ducting/Wall+Outlet+Gravity+Flap+125mm+Brown/d190/sd3083/p57686. If the wind blows at the vent, the flaps close, but they open freely when the fan is running.
  • It looks like best will be the Icon Airflow 30 although I'm not sure whether I need the 12v or normal one. I'll make sure I get a cover fitted with flaps. Does the Icon Airflow 30, then plus the humidistat come with everything else needed to install it, just need to get the cover for the outside.

Any idea where is the cheapest to buy from?
  • Hi, I've been looking into getting an Airflow Icon fan too. The cheapest place I've found is a website called Alert Electrical, though I was looking at the Icon 15. We only have a small bathroom, now I wonder if we should get an Icon 30 instead??

I'm assuming the electrician will supply things like ducting, though I haven't contacted anyone for a quote yet.
  • I'm really struggling to find the Icon 30 12v plus humidistat cheap. The cheapest place I've found the Icon 30 is £115 plus VAT (City Electrical Factors, my local store), plus around £25 for the humidity module. I've seen quite a few different fans with humidistat but these 'look nice' in comparison.

Can anyone suggest any cheaper stores.

Does the room have an outside wall? I would always recommend venting to atmosphere rather than into the loft.

Yes, If it is on the wall it can go straight out of the outside wall (bungalow), however if I need it to go on the ceiling it can go straight into the loft and then outside of the outside wall (if that makes sense). I suppose it just depends on whether I fit the fan on the ceiling or wall.

I'm set on the Icon range as it 'looks nice', in addition to the other plus points mentioned on here. The Icon30 and humidistat module is probably going to cost around the £150 mark in total, plus an electrician to fit, etc.... Anyone who has this, can you advise if you can take the pull cord off it so it just operates with the humidity sensor. I don't want it dangling down above the bath.
