Stamp Duty - Claim back?

Hi
I'm a first time buyer and completed on my new flat on Friday (11th) and handed over £750 for stamp duty. As of mdinight on Wednesday (16th) i would not have had to pay any stamp duty thus saving me £750 !!! As you can guess i am quiet cheesed off because i could really use that cash at the moment (carpet, bed, food etc !).
Does anybody think it is worth writing to the Inland Revenue to try and claim it back? Maybe speaking to my solicitor? Is it worth a go, or am i wasting my time?

Sorry to say there is nothing you can do. the law came in at midnight 17th march, anything before that i am afraid you were unlucky.

Nothing you can do. when you bought your house, you owed £750. End of!
what you should have done......and I'm surprised your solicitor didnt mention it, is wait until after the budget. There would have been no guarantee of a reduction, and it "could" have made it worse (but not likely before an election), but all the odds were stacked in favour of a rise in stamp duty threshold.
I guarantee convayancing solicitors have been snowed under since the budget with people exchanging, after waiting for this very thing!!!Anything I write is based on my opinion only. Before acting upon any advice from anyone on a forum further professional advice should be sought.0 -
It's not just down to your solicitor to have suggested it ... all the commentary suggested that an increase in the threshhold was likely. You were daft to agree to complete immediately prior to the budget.0

I'm sometimes a little harsh, but there wasn't a single prediction about the budget which DID NOT suggest that the limit would be raised. And the OP only paid £75k for the house - well within any sensible likely increase in the limit.0

Would have loved to have waited a bit till completing but the transaction was dragging on a bit and the seller was threatening to pull.
