Can I request a repair instead of a refund?

Hi, In October I bought a surf tablet at a reduced price (due to it being discontinued stock) at a electrical high street store as an xmas present for my wife. On xmas day it worked for approx 3 hours then wouldn't switch on. I rang the manufacturers helpline and they suggested taking it back to the store as it was over 28 days old. I took it back on 31st Dec and was given the option of a refund, as this had been discontinued and couldn't be replaced. A new updated model would now cost me double to buy so I requested it be sent for repair. I was given a job repair document that requested I collect it on 17th Jan unless heard otherwise. On 17th Jan I rang to check it was back only to be told it wasn't & they would chase it. I then received call from the store stating the manufacters were waiting for parts & it would be another 1-2 weeks. I rang the manufacturers the next day as I already had a reference number from my first call and was told they has no record of my tablet being in for repair nor did they have any parts problems. I contacted the high street store once again and was infromed 1) The courier only came to collect the tablet for repair on Friday 13th. 2) They had already offered me a refund which they were obliged to do. 3) Only as a good will gesture they have sent it to the manufacturer for repair. Is this correct or do I have a right under the warrenty to get this fixed & if so should I allow them another 2 weeks?
