Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

I have found stock on display that is either damaged or in poor condition.
I put this down to poor stock control and poor in store handling.
in our store in Tamworth the plants don't seem to be looked after at all and are usually in a really crispy condition!!! They must have to throw away a large percentage.0 -
I have to confess; last year when Lidl decided to sell natural fertiliser in half hundred bags: I thought that was a bad idea. The entire store stank like a cattle shed.0

I go to Aldi specifically to buy their packs of 2 long pointy red peppers, rock salt, Norpack butter, their pre-cooked potato au gratin and ground/sliced almonds. Soooo much cheaper :j Geting a Lidl too in the summer :j0

We have been doing the main shop in Aldi for a few months now and love it! Not only is it cheaper, it is always so much quieter and less stressful than the mainstream supermarkets.
My favourites:
Bran Flakes - massive box for 99p
Chocolate milk - 95p per litre
The Choceur chocolate bars 5 pack, esp the marzipan one
All the fruit and veg
The Cheese Emporium cheese
Dried fruit packs, great for snacking on
They are not so good for vegetarian meat substitute stuff (Quorn, etc) but Lidl do have some so can get that sort of stuff there.0 -
I'm fortunate in that I have two Aldis' within a mile of where I live - one in one direction, the other the opposite [it's technically one long road] and the one Lidl.
Lidl I'm not that big a fan of - it's an oldish store and looks dated inside - the same is true of the Aldi on the opposite side of the road.
When it comes to Lidi I usually only nip in there if there's something on offer that catches my eye - this weekend I picked up a big bag of British Spinach for .69 and 1.5L bottle of Multi-vitamin juice [.89] which I'll start tomorrow morning.
Aldi on the other-hand, is where I do the vast majority of my shopping. As mentioned the one opposite the Lidl is also a lil old and can get crowded / run out of stock quickly, so I tend to go to the newer branch, which is much bigger, and tends to have more items in stock.
In terms of the "Good things" to pick up? I tend to pick up the following:- 1KG Bananas - .68
- Funsize Apples - .99
- 1KG Carrots [vary in price from week to week]
- Farmhouse Multi-Grain Batch Loaf - .89
- Seasonal Salad Bags - .49
- Raisins - .89
I'll also take advantage of the Super Six offers, as well as anything else on offer - I picked up loads of Blueberries a few months ago when they were .59 a punnet. They're currently .79 so I've been picking up a few each week to put in the lunchbox. The new Super Six offers don't really appeal to me all that much, bar the Baking Potatoes [4 for .39] which I'll probably pick up a packet of.Live Healthily for £40 a month challenge:
January 2012: £36.51 spent.
February 2012: £39.55 spent.
March 2012: £38.02 spent.
April 2012: Skipped.
May 2012: £24.13 [So far].0 -
Has anyone seen Austins recently (Pimms-type drink) ?
If so how much?0 -

Still on a high from Friday's shop - I'd brought the african peanut soup for 99p and had it for lunch in work today and it was just like eating chicken satay as a soup - so I've returned today for 2 more tins and a chicken and I am going to make a satay style thing with this soup as the sauce - really tasty!0

There's a daily Mail article today that claims that cheap Aldi wine has been judged among the world's best:Some dinner party hosts might feel insulted if a guest turned up with a cheap bottle of plonk from Aldi.
But a panel of experts has named a wine sold by the budget supermarket for just £3.59 as one of the world’s best.
Its own-brand Spanish Toro Loco Tempranillo from 2011 excelled in blind taste tests alongside reds costing nearly ten times as much.
Judges at the International Wine and Spirit Competition awarded it a silver medal, describing it as ‘fruity, rounded and appealing’ with hints of ‘nice bright cherry’.
But it's still too expensive! I live in Germany and always buy their Merlot at EUR 1.99 the bottle.0
