Appealing Motoring fine

Please could someone help me with where I stand on the following matter.

Yesterday I received a letter from the DVLA requesting my license. I rung them and they said it was for a failure to provide documents on the 6th September and that it would incur 6 points on my license and a £25 fine.

As this was the first and only letter that I have received they suggested I contact the magistrates court who dealt with the issue.

On doing so they said that the offence was for 23rd July and was a speeding offence. I have no idea where in Southampton this took place or whether I was even there at the time.

As the letters sent by the police were sent to the wrong address they suggested that I write to my local magistrates and ask them to look into as I hadn't received any letters.

I have no idea what to do now other than to send my license to the DVLA (which I need to do within the next 28 days) and accept the 6 points.

Any advice would be gratefully received

Sounds like you are in trouble.

I'm guessign your car is registered at an old address? It is your job to update the DVLA when you move to stop this happening. If that is the case, I doubt there is much you can do.

If on the other hand the Police have written something down wrong or made a genuine mistake, you might be able to get some help. Also worth looking back through emails etc to determine where you were (with witnesses) incase your car has been cloned. As you've not said "I live in Scotland how could I have been in Southampton?" I'm guessing there might be a reason for you to be in the area occasionally at least.

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Yes the address is an old address but the DVLA also have the correct one.

I live in Swansea but there is a possibility I was in Southampton on this date but as it was so long ago I'm not sure I have proof of where I was.

It looks like you have been convicted in your absence, possibly for failing to provide driver details in relation to a speeding matter. If you have not received any letters either from then police or the court then you will need to apply to the court to have the conviction set aside.

As suggested above, go to www.pepipoo.com to their speeding section and give them as many details as possible so they can provide the maximum assistance.
