Licences are usually sold in the retail channel only to be used on one machine or 3. Once you have installed it on that number of computers you can't just keep installing it on others unless you remove it from a computer.
If it is a OEM licence though, it can only be installed on that machine and the licence is not transferrable.0 -
If you just want basic Microsoft Office 2010 functioning https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/50139973#Comment_50139973
If you think you have the right to more/extended licences for your product phone Microsoft and see if they can help.0 -
In the past, a single copy of MS Office could be installed on a "licensed device" and a "portable device" so long as the installation on the portable device is used only by the "single primary user of the licensed device". I think the terms are still the same.
You can find the licensing terms for Office 2010 here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...d-88d982292b07
Anyway, you could try uninstalling it from your old PC before installing on your new laptop. Or if the drive has been formatted, Microsoft should be able to reset the licence settings that are preventing you from installing it.
If you need a free office suite for your old laptop, check out LibreOffice. It's semi-compatible with MS Office (all the basic features are supported).0 -

You are correct....for a standard purchased retail licence. (ie non OEM)

This sounds like you've hit the nail on the head...0 -
Thanks
It was a licence for 3 machines.
I will try uninstalling it from the old laptop and reinstalling on the new.0 -
Unfortuntately there seems no way of determining how many times a licence has been used.
It would be so much easier for everyone if this could be done online and you then see how many were left.
MS could even add it into the authentication proceedure responses.0 -
