I have an Epson SX400 printer/scanner which I use imitation ink cartridges in - as a money saver
However, when I change the cartridges - they never let me just change the black or cyan (or whatever) - once, one has been removed, I have to change them all - even if some are still half full....
Has anyone else noticed this ?

Have you tried putting the half empty ones in a plastic bag, folding it over or tying it to make it airtight, then trying them when you need to change an empty one.
You could also try removing all the inks, switching the printer off, removing the power lead from the back of the printer for a few minutes, replacing the power lead, switching the printer on, then installing the inks, (half used plus the new one) when it asks for the inks
I use pro jet and they can be changed alright

i have the epson sx200, the baby brother to the sx400, and I only need to change the cartridge that becomes empty, not all of them in 1 go, I got my compatibles via ebay through ink-power, make sure they come with the latest v7 chip. which ever company you buy from. Its this chip which tells the printer how full/empty and how much ink is in the cartridge.
You didnt say how old the printer is, and how long you've been using the compatibles, or if you do a lot of printing.
As santer said, just take out and replace with the half filled cartridges + the new one and tell the printer onscreen that they are new, always use the ink cartridge replacement in the drivers on the pc to change them.0 -
I have the SX405 - basically a SX400 and never noticed that. I've had them come up empty when its been doing the initial charge. The aftermarket ones seem to misreport the ink levels.0
