Itunes and Ipod not syncing

I hope someone can help me with my Ipod Touch well actually my husband's but I am in charge of techy stuff in our house!
Basically the thing won't sync or update to the new operating system. It seems to get stuck on backing up! In fact it seems not to even start that. If you try and sync it just keeps candystriping and if you update it the same.
Any ideas?
Have tried
- Different cables
- Diagnostics in itunes all comes back ok
- Reinstalling itunes
- Leaving it for ages (14 hours!)
Thanks in advance.

PS Wish he had stuck to his Zen!

I experienced a similar issue a while ago which, like yours, seemed to be caused by backup getting stuck. I found a small program called BackOff which allowed me to disable automatic backup of my iPhone and allowed sync/updates to continue unhindered.
I am still able to backup manually by right-clicking my device and selecting Backup. For some reason it backup worked perfectly doing it this way. I couldn't see the point of backing up everytime I opened iTunes in anyway and if I had not disabled the automatic backup I would have had 3 or 4 backups a day.
If that's not for you then try right-clicking your device in iTunes and then clicking "Reset Warnings". It didn't work for me but I know it has for some.0 -

There was a similar problem recently in another thread.
Have you tried a different USB port on the PC. Sometimes the easy to get at USB ports on the front of the PC can cause problems like this.
Try one of the USB ports on the back of the PC, unless it's a lap top in which case I don't know. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

See if you have the most upto date Itunes software (it honestly seems every other week a new version comes out)
What generation is the Itouch? Some have reached the end of life with updates.
Try deleting any old backup files
Follow this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2529
Try posting on the apple forums (they've been incredibly useful for my problems with apple goods)
Try manual back ups first.
If nothing else, reset the ipod, remove the itunes software, restart computer, install latest downloaded version, then connect afterwards and see if that does anything0 -
