TalkTalk fees add 1000% to bill ...

After being a customer of TalkTalk for 8 years I cancelled my account with them in October. Having done that, a few weeks later I cancelled the direct debit.

It now turns out that there was a balance of £2.32 of call charges due that they were unable to take in late October. As we don't get paper billing and would have to login to check our bills I was not aware of this: I knew that we'd cancelled and were no longer using them so I had no need to check bills.

They have now added charges every month since then so that the bill stands at £29.89 which is something like a 1000% increase on the original bill, thanks to their charges !!

Needless to say I have written to them several times pointing out the somewhat unfair nature of their charges, but they are not interested in making an exception, even for a customer of such long standing (with no previous issues).

You have been warned ....

First, check your contract for the terms of cancellation. Does it say you need to check your online account for a period after cancellation?

If not, I would send by signed-for post a cheque for £2.32 stating that you are not prepared to pay charges for late payment after the date of cancellation, as any request for payment should have been posted to you. And that on their acceptance of this payment, you consider the matter resolved.

If they cash the cheque, you have a very good defense if they continue to pursue you. Even if they don't, you have good evidence that you tried to resolve the issue in a reasonable manner.

Thanks wriggly. I have checked their T&C's and there is nothing about needing to check the online account after termination.

They even said to me that they were unable to contact me, which is ridiculous because I still have the same phone number and they had no problem bombarding me with marketing calls even after termination !

Would you suggest writing "In full and final settlement" on the cheque also ?
