We eat too much and throw away a criminal amount of perfectly good food anyway.

Good. Hopefully this will reduce the shameful and disgusting levels of food waste in this country (and no, it's not "the rich" throwing away all that food, even the people complaining they are the most hard done by seem to throw out a lot).

Agree with this. I went around to a friend's house who had literally no money to her name to find a massive fridge full of food she'd just left to rot because she didn't feel like eating it. Such a waste. :(

My food budget has decreased, but not for the reasons stated in the article. I'm simply spending less because I don't want to spend any more than necessary. So going back to simple, hearty meals without the posh, expensive ingredients. With as little waste as possible.

Since the 70's the proportion of food bills vs income has disproportionately fallen versus the cost to produce the food and we have been spoiled with cheap mass production. Going back to Victorian times, a family could spend 1/3 (if not more) of their income on food. Not suggesting that we go back to Victorian times and start shoving kids up the chimneys again but we have got 'comfortable' with having disposable income. It would be interesting to see how much those who were surveyed and said they were cutting back to meet fuel and housing costs also spent on things like Sky, mobile contracts, paid for entertainment (ohh er!), cars and such.

    Food and toilet habits.

How much toilet paper does a family of four go through in a year?

I put in a shattaf (hand bidet, arabic dusche) for the toilet, and I use very little toilet paper these days. That is probably £200 in toilet paper for a family of four, £200 saved for food.

    Andrex toilet tissue - white - .22p/sheet.
To hit 200 pounds a year, you would need to each use 62 sheets a day.
    That's quite a habit.

I highly doubt people are cutting back on 'essentials' as the article suggest.
People may be cutting down on 'treats' and such like, not spoiling themselves
to that £20 shampoo, £15 bottle of wine, moving down brands etc etc

Just because people may be cutting back, doesn't mean they are cutting back
    on the 'essentials'

£4 a week on toilet roll :rotfl::rotfl: my god, your
    !!!!!! cant be that big.

Either you use too much or your diet is so bad that you
don't produce stools, you produce a watery mess that
    splashes everywhere ;)
  • Agree that if cutting back on essential foods, means buying less thngs to throw away, then its a good thing! i still have things imy fridge from last week that we will be finidhing off tonight rather than throwing away. We do still waste food but are working on it - to save the world and stp wastage as much as to save money

  • the main thing people do is rush "slow down dear" and blokes! do not rush, do not buy from the end of an aisle!! Too many people rush through, I have even seen idiots yes this really happened, rushing through a self service and leaving the change (ASDA) all £10 of it!!!! Also check the price per kilo/gram etc this is very importandt across all food ranges, the enemy will try to deceive you so check and re check, take your time, as this can open your eyes! The price can vary hugely coffee and cereals are easy to check, remember shops are there to make a profit not help you!! get real!! walk into any supermarket and before you start remember they want all your money, so decide not to let them have all your money!! TESCO do not get me started on TESCO they have to be almost the most expensive place to shop, and before anyone argues do a comparison just on every day items bread, milk, soap powder/liquid, cereals etc then come back ok! bench mark fro cereals for example is £1.20 ish per packet 500g or 3 for £3.

Meat prices are off the scale at £7/kilo for Chick in most places!!! for chicken!! and Turkey, best but is turkey leg £1.78 (ASDA) other supermarkets are available bla bla, but they will cost you more!

Farmfoods is ok good deals bread 3 for £2, frozen veg same offer and mix and match 3 for 2. Oh chocaholics creme eggs 39p at Farmfoods 50p ASDA 60p TESCO/Sainsbugs !!!!!! Turpin had the good grace to wear a mask!! Toblerone large bar £2+ everywhere except Poundstretcher £1 (one pound) I know the clue is in the name but what a difference).

I have a 4 yr old and a 9 month old baby so that is why I take the time and inwardly digest prices. Nor do I have an I phone with the pricing AP (that would be great!)

In short, slow down retain your receipts and take a note of prices, it is your money if you say you do not have time to check prices than you do not need to save the money in the first place, there is no excuse it is your money nobody else will do it for you!

As for toilet roll, moist toilet paper and normal, in perfect harmony (no not at the same time :) ) as you use less of each item.

Just notices "I luv's" chicken thighs (price) and soup ASDA 50p per tin all standard flavours, 35p per tin saving.

    Happy shopping
